Frequently Asked Questions

Q When I create a data field, ACT assigns a unique number to each of data field , how or where can I find that number.
A You have to run the program ACTDIAG.EXE found in the ACT directory.  This will (among other things) generate reports specific to your database, including producing the field number assignments.

Q I followed ALL directions and am still unable to even open the BrokersACT database now as it says your database was created with a newer version and cannot be opened.
A The problem here is you are trying to open BrokersACT 6.0 for ACT 6.0 with an earlier version of ACT!  BrokersACT6.0 currently only works with ACT6.0x.  Please update your ACT! software to the current version.

Q

When I installed BrokersACT, I was not able to find the BrokersACT layout or see any BrokersACT customized fields
A This is the most common error, however, we have a solution that is even easier than the installation process.

A couple of pointers to keep in mind as you begin to use BrokersACT.

1. All our files are located in c:\program files\BrokersACT\ on your hard drive.

2. Act should have been installed in c:\program files\ACT if it was installed in it's default directory. If ACT resides in another location other than the default location, you will need to manually copy a few files and directories to make things work smoothly.

The common mistake made is trying to use our layout without using our customized database. If you are having this problem, (i.e. no BrokersACT layout or missing fields) please do the following.

1. check to see that the following file is present in these locations on your computer and follow the directions

c:\program files\BrokersACT\layout\BrokersACT!.cly (or similar)

*** copy this file to C:\Program Files\ACT\Layout\ ***

2. Copy our reports directory "BrokersACT-Reports"

C:\Program Files\BrokersACT\Report\BrokersACT-Reports\

to the default ACT report directory C:\Program Files\ACT\Report\

3. Copy our templates directory "BrokersACT Template"

C:\Program Files\BrokersACT\Template\BrokersACT Template\

to the default ACT report directory C:\Program Files\ACT\Template\

Now the only thing to do is open our customized database. Find our database file in the following location

c:\program files\BrokersACT\database\BrokersACT.dbf

If you double click on this file, this should start ACT. You can also start ACT normally and then click on File, Open, then find our file by browsing the directories.

Now that Act is running and our database is the current working database, things may still not look quite right. We need to pull up our layout. by Selecting the layout button at the bottom right of the ACT window (next to Group) you can search for the layout file we copied there a short while ago. find the BrokersACT! layout among those listed. Now things should look correct with the text and fields all present.

Now click on File, Save Copy As, then notice the window that pops up. You MUST select the "Create Empty Copy" and give your database a name like Contacts. Now click on OK and follow the rest of the prompts. Now when you open ACT, your newly named database will be residing in your default location and the BrokersACT layout (if it was the last one you used) will be the one you see when you open ACT.

Hope this helps. There really isn't much else to installing it.

Again, for review:

There is one file and 2 directories you need to copy to your default ACT location.

You need to open our BrokersACT database located in the BrokersACT/database/ directory.

You need to select the BrokersACT! layout to see all our customized fields.

You need to save this database as an empty database with your contact/user information.

That should do it.

Q
How do I get the regular Brokers Act to come up.  I can switch back and forth to both screen sizes with no problem. However, the program always opens up in 1280 x 1024.  Can I configure it to automatically come up as Brokers Act?
A The ACT program usually defaults to the last layout you had open when you exit ACT.  Also, you can set the Layout to open with a specific layout by making this setting in the Preferences, Startup tab

Click on EXIT, then Preferences, then click the Startup tab.  in the left is the space to set the default layout.  you can browse the layout files and select the one you want ACT to always start with.
